Our History
We are a relatively young church. Our church was started by several Lutheran families who had moved to the Lake Oconee area in the late 1990s and wanted a church closer to home because the nearest Lutheran churches were an hour’s drive away. Late in 1998, we started running newspaper ads in our tri-county area to determine the level of interest in starting a Lutheran church. The response was good and we started meeting on a monthly basis in February, 1999. Our first Pastor was installed in February, 2000, and his ministry lasted 13 years until his retirement. During that time, our membership grew. Our third and current pastor, Steven Hayden, was installed in 2018.
From the beginning as a very small church, our founding pastor encouraged all members, young and old, men and women, to actively support our ministry and to be involved as both members and leaders in all our church functions.
Our church building was built by our congregation in 2003, working with Laborers for Christ. As our church was being built, our members wrote their favorite Bible verses on the framing studs. We are a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. We have a diverse membership including people from several Lutheran and other denominations. Our Church is strategically located between the towns of Eatonton, Greensboro and Madison in the heart of Georgia’s lake country.
If you are looking for a church home, we invite you to visit Lake Oconee Lutheran Church. We believe you will find a warm and welcoming church of believers who worship God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit.
